Hyperbar
3-Band Upward & Downward Dynamics Engine
Squeeze Your Sound: High-Pressure OTT Dynamics for Reason
Whether you’re looking for that huge EDM pump and glassy top-end shimmer or surgical multiband control on a master bus, Hyperbar brings the power of 3-band upward and downward dynamics natively into the Reason rack.
Hyperbar is equally comfortable wearing a suit or a spike collar. Crank the drive, push compression ratios past ∞:1 into negative over-compression, and slam a parallel drum bus. Or slide open the calibration drawer to engage transparent mastering modes with phase-coherent crossover summing, low-end smoothing, and noise-floor gating that won’t pull up silence and room hiss.
Unlike standard downward compressors that only push loud peaks down, Hyperbar works in both directions across three decoupled frequency bands. It pulls quiet details and tail decay upward by up to +36 dB while clamping loud transients downward by up to -24 dB.
In the Mix: Five Everyday Production Workflows
1. Vocal Glassy Air & Consonant Lift
Insert Hyperbar on a lead vocal, blend the parallel Blend control to around 35–50%, and load Quick - Vocal Glassy Air. The high-band upward compressor lifts breath details, consonant clarity, and top-end air without harsh sibilance, while the mid-band upward compressor keeps the vocal body anchored firmly forward in the mix.
2. Sub-Bass & 808 Decay Sculpting
Getting 808s and sub-bass right means balancing initial transient punch with sustained low-end weight. Load Quick - Bass & 808 Sub Lock and flip the calibration drawer’s Sub Detect switch:
- Clean: Uses anti-ripple smoothing, eliminating low-frequency intermodulation distortion for transparent sub-bass leveling.
- Gritty: Uses instantaneous peak tracking, introducing aggressive odd-order saturation in the sub octave that cuts through on smaller speakers.
3. Drum Bus Punch & Parallel Room Crush
For explosive parallel drums, send your kit to a bus loaded with Quick - Drum Bus Punch & Room. Turn Speed toward Punch: downward compression clamps initial drum hits while upward compression pulls up room bleed, hi-hat shimmer, and snare shell resonance. Blend the return under your dry kit for immediate thickness and weight.
4. Ambient Reverb Blooming & Tail Extraction
Take a dry synth pluck or acoustic guitar loop. Load Quick - Ambient Reverb Cloud and turn Speed toward Bloom. As notes decay, upward compression pulls the dying reverb tail forward, creating an ambient wash between notes without smearing the initial attacks.
5. Mix Bus Density & Mastering Lift
Across a full mix or master bus, Hyperbar acts as a low-level detail maximizer. Load Quick - Mix Bus Density Lift with Squeeze set low (15–25%) and Crossover Mode set to Studio (flat phase-coherent summing). Low-level background elements, vocal reverbs, and subtle stereo cues are brought forward without altering the overall frequency balance.
Tactile Control: Front Panel & Calibration Drawer
Hyperbar gives you immediate, tactile control across both its full 3U chassis and compact folded view:
Full 3U Faceplate
- Bay 1 (Tone Shaping):
Heatinput drive (±18 dB with legend markers forQUIET,CLEAN,FIERCE),Speedballistics multiplier (10% to 1000% with markers forPUNCH,SWELL,BLOOM), and the widescreen patch browser well next to the On/Off/Bypass rocker. - Bay 2 (3-Band Dynamics Core): Three frequency bands (
Low,Mid,High, with subtitle rolesWeight,Bite,Air). Each band features anINlevel bead, a central bidirectional dynamics tube (downward compression pressing from the top in amber/red, upward lift rising from the bottom in cyan), anOUTlevel bead, and a vertical threshold bias fader (±18 dB) to shift where dynamics engage. - Bay 3 (Master Dynamics & Output): The large
Squeezedial scales overall compression depth from 0% to 200% (with a nominal 100% detent), accompanied byBlend(parallel dry/wet mix),Thrust(output makeup gain from -18 to +18 dB), and a 24-segment stereo peak meter.
The Calibration Drawer: Fixing OTT’s Classic Flaws
Click the latch handle (PULL BAY ▼) beneath the main controls to slide open the calibration drawer, revealing precision engineering controls that address OTT’s most notorious quirks:
- Crossover Splits:
Sub Split(60 Hz – 1.2 kHz, default 140 Hz) andAir Split(800 Hz – 12 kHz, default 2.5 kHz) using 4th-order (24 dB/octave) phase-coherent Linkwitz-Riley filters. - Character Modes:
- EQ (
STUDIO | SCOOPED): Studio mode provides flat crossover summing without phase cancellation at split points; Scooped mode restores the classic phase-notch that gives OTT its scooped midrange sound. - Sub Detect (
CLEAN | GRITTY): Clean uses anti-ripple smoothing to eliminate low-frequency intermodulation distortion on deep bass and 808s; Gritty uses instantaneous peak tracking for vintage grit and harmonic bite. - Up-Gate (
GATED | WILD): Gated clamps upward expansion below -60 dBFS so resting noise floors, amp hum, and room bleed remain silent; Wild leaves upward compression active down to zero. - Limiter (
SOFT | HARD): Soft applies smooth cubic saturation before clipping; Hard acts as a brickwall limiter.
- EQ (
- Per-Band Fine Trims: Dedicated rotary controls for
Crush(downward depth),Deadband(dynamic dead zone),Lift(upward depth), andGaintrim, flanked by individualSOLOandMUTEbuttons for each band.
Compact 1U Folded Strip
When rack space is tight, Hyperbar folds into a compact 1U hardware strip with direct access to its core controls:
- Direct Macro Dials: Dedicated rotary controls for
HEAT(drive),SPEED(ballistics),SQUEEZE(global depth),BLEND(mix),THRUST(output gain), andLIMIT(soft-clip toggle). - Navigation & Metering: Front patch browser and stereo output metering.

Modular Rack Routing & CV Matrix
Flip Hyperbar around to take full advantage of Reason’s cabling environment:
- 16 Modular Audio Jacks: 8 stacked vertical pairs of 1/4” balanced TRS jacks (
Main In,Sidechain In,Sidechain Thru,Low Out,Mid Out,High Out,Remainder Out,Main Out) with Right jacks positioned below Left/Mono. - Dynamic Residual Bus (
Remainder Out): Automatically sums whichever frequency bands are not tapped by individual band outputs. For example, patchingLow Outto a dedicated external sub processor leavesRemainder Outcarrying Mid + High for subsequent processing. - Sidechain In & Thru: Frequency-dependent sidechain detection routed through Linkwitz-Riley crossovers matched to your main audio path.
- 12 CV Modulation Inputs: Dedicated bipolar attenuverters (-100% to +100%) for
Drive,Depth,Time,Mix,X-Over Low,X-Over High, and individual per-bandDownandUpdepths. - 16-Jack 4x4 CV Telemetry Matrix: Unipolar CV outputs (0.0 to 1.0) organized by columns (
ENVenvelope follower,CRSHdownward gain reduction,LIFTupward expansion,TRANStransient gate) across rows forLOW,MID,HIGH, andALL.
Under the Hood: Pure C++17 DSP Core
The DSP engine is written in standard ISO C++17, completely decoupled from host SDK dependencies:
- Phase-Coherent Filtering: 4th-order (24 dB/octave) Linkwitz-Riley crossover networks implemented with 64-bit double-precision floating-point cascaded biquads.
- True Zero Latency: 0 samples of algorithmic latency for artifact-free tracking, live monitoring, and parallel drum blending.
- Sample Rate Independence: Ballistics, time multipliers, and crossover filters calculate continuous coefficients across all host sample rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz.
